Research is how Melosome reduces uncertainty before turning an idea into an obligation.

Our work is applied. We investigate emerging technologies and difficult operating problems with the intention of making better decisions, building useful products or deciding not to build.

Research themes

Responsible artificial intelligence

We examine how AI can support judgement, creation, analysis and operations while preserving human accountability, meaningful oversight, privacy and security.

Our interest is not limited to model capability. We also consider:

• failure modes;
• provenance;
• evaluation;
• agent permissions;
• data boundaries;
• explainability;
• escalation;
• safe interruption; and
• the organisational controls required around AI-enabled systems.

Secure and resilient systems

We research how digital systems can remain trustworthy under error, misuse, attack and change.

Themes include:

• security by design;
• cyber resilience;
• evidence and auditability;
• containment and recovery;
• identity and access;
• privacy-preserving architecture;
• supply-chain risk; and
• secure operation across cloud and local environments.

Automation and operational platforms

We investigate where automation can remove avoidable effort without removing necessary judgement.

The objective is not automation at any cost. It is better control, clearer decisions, reliable execution and an operating model that people can understand.

Human-centred digital services

We study how technology can support people in consequential or complex settings without exploiting their attention, obscuring responsibility or creating unnecessary dependency.

Research method

Our public method is deliberately simple:

1. Frame the question.
   Define the decision the research must support.

2. Collect relevant evidence.
   Use credible sources, domain expertise, observation and experiments.

3. Test assumptions.
   Look for evidence that could disprove the preferred answer.

4. Prototype selectively.
   Build only what is needed to test the important uncertainty.

5. Assess consequences.
   Consider security, privacy, safety, incentives, accessibility and long-term operation.

6. Decide.
   Progress, revise, pause or stop.

7. Record the reasoning.
   Preserve enough evidence for the decision to be reviewed later.

Research boundaries

We do not use “research” as a justification for reckless testing or the collection of data without a clear basis.

Our work must respect:

• law and authorisation;
• programme and system boundaries;
• privacy and confidentiality;
• safeguarding;
• intellectual property;
• responsible disclosure;
• human oversight; and
• the principle that defensive technology must not become an uncontrolled offensive capability.

Publications

Selected papers, findings and technical notes may be published when doing so contributes to the field without exposing confidential work, security-sensitive detail or the rights of others.

Publication is not the measure of whether research was useful. Sometimes the correct outcome is an internal decision, a safer design or a project that is deliberately not pursued.
